A Clinical Study of Intussusception



Abstract
This article consists of a clinical study of 84 cases of intussusception treated at the dept. of pediatric & general surgery of Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital during the past 3 years from July 1973 to June 1976.
1. On the age distribution, the age incidence under 1 year old was most common (82. 1%), but it was absent (0%) under 1 month of age and 5.9% in adult 2. The incidence rate of male to female was 1.4 : 1.
3. The patient who visited to hospital within 24 hrs from onset of the symptoms was occupied in 63%.
4. On the etiology of intussusception, idiopathic type was most common (92.8%), especially all cases in adults were idiopathic.
5. The anatomic types of intussusception composed of ileocecal 41.7%, ileocolic 34.5%,
ileoileocolic 10.7%, ileoileocecal 7.3%, ileoileal 3.4%, ileocecocolic 2.4%.
6. The cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain (81%), bloody stool (77.4%), abdominal mass (65.4%), abdominal distention (46.4).
7. The barium reduction was successful in 45.5%p
8. The recurrance rate following barium reduction was 10%, but its rate following surgical operation was 0%.
9. The manual reduction was carried out;-in 85.9% and resection was made in 14. 1%.
10. The postoperative complications developed in 15 cases of 84 cases (17.8%).
